Welcome to the Contact Point Moldova - Germany
One of the goals of Rotary is to support understanding and peace among peoples. This goal is primarily pursued in international meetings, youth exchanges and work at international humanitarian projects.
The Contact Point Moldova sees itself as a guide for projects and contacts between the Rotary Clubs of both countries.
Republic of Moldova
From history we know a Principality of Moldau (see History and Conditions of Living). In Romanian language which is quite the same as Moldovan language the country is called Moldova, in Hungarian Moldva, in Polish Moldavia and in German mostly Moldawien whereas the official name in Germany is Moldau. The same name Moldau has also been a river existing far away, now named Vltava, rising in the Bohemian Forest and flowing into the river Elbe near Melnik northern of Prague.
To make it even more complicated: Whereas the Republic of Moldova is situated east of the river Prut the Republic of Romania has a District called 'Moldova' in the West of this river too.
Moldova is a European country. The poverty, however, existing in this country is hardly imaginable for West Europeans. For Moldovan people this is even more depressing since they are mostly aware of the difference in living conditions compared with the rich countries of Western Europe not far away.

This easily creates a feeling of being discriminated and encourages people to try their utmost to overcome their situation. In the way this leads to criminality it concerns us directly.

Helping Moldovans means helping ourselves as well.
